Willowbrook Park
04/15/2008 - By Charles Di Bartolo Willowbrook Park
Willow Brook Park is a north Shore Staten Island Park with a pond, ball fields, a picnic area with a playground and carousel. Its a perfect place to get lost for a few hours and forget you're in the city.Willowbrook Park
Willowbrook Park is another great place to spend a tranquil day on Staten Island. Like Clove Lakes Park this is a park that I thought of as the country, being a child raised in Brooklyn NY. We used to come here to feed the ducks. Today we know that we shouldn’t do that because it’s no good for the ducks besides being illegal. The pond, located in the park is home to migrating ducks and geese. I have seen cranes and quite a few other species of birds feeding there. From what I understand the parks department does allow catch and release fishing here. I would secure a permit if you don’t have one. The park is over 160 acres and is a great place to forget that you’re in one of the boroughs of New York. Willowbrook Park is a fun place to take a quick jaunt around the pond watch a few birds. The park itself has a beautiful carousel, baseball fields, football fields and an archery range. It’s a great place to take the kids for some recreation and fresh air. It also has a picnic grove and a kid’s playground. The picnic grove has tables and a barbeque area. There are also some trails that run from this park at the northern end of Staten Island to other destinations south. You can pick up information on the trails in Staten Island from the parks department. The parks department also offers hikes for beginners. Check their schedule at http://www.nycgovparks.org for more information. Willowbrook Park has two entrances. One entrance is on Victory Blvd. next to the College of Staten Island. The other entrance is on Eton Place off Richmond Ave. So the next time it’s a beautiful day and you don’t know what to do, take some sports equipment a picnic lunch and a good book and visit Willowbrook Park.
