IDENTITY THEFT
Identity theft is a growing problem that has spread so rapidly in the last 2 years that Law Enforcement Agencies find themselves over whelmed at times with numerous identity theft victims in their community. We too have been the victims of identity theft in a brief dealing with a service provider who turned out to be dishonest. So everyone is vulnerable to identity theft and it is a growing problem amongst the criminal element out there.
One of the most likely ways to capture your identity is on the internet with matters concerning your credit card, Social Security Number, Drivers License information, full name, residential address and telephone number given on internet purchases.
We caution our clients to avoid internet purchases at all times unless they know their merchant very well and have done their homework to make sure the company or person is reputable.
Do not be afraid to ask questions of your merchant or seller. Ask them their full name, title, telephone numbers, email address and references. Many times victims will contact our office for assistance and have so little information it’s hard to assist them.
Monitor your credit report and credit card statements weekly to insure there are no unauthorized purchase that you can’t verify.
Check your Social Security Number to insure others are not using it and attempting to steal your identity with your information.
Do not carry your Social Security card on your person but rather keep it locked up in a safe location until it’s actually needed.
